The NABA Butterfly Counts, a program for the North American Butterfly Association, is a compilation of all butterflies observed at sites within a 15-mile diameter count circle in a one-day period. The annually published reports provide a tremendous amount of information about the geographical distribution and relative population sizes of the species counted. Comparisons of the results across years can be used to monitor changes in butterfly populations and study the effects of weather and habitat change on North American butterflies.
In 2009, 463 butterfly counts were held (27 Spring Seasonal counts, 386 4th/1st of July & 16th of September counts, and 50 Fall Seasonal counts). The 434 counts in the U.S. in 2009 were held in 49 states. Florida led in number of counts (55), followed by Texas (34), and California (26). Fourteen other states submitted 10-25 counts, 25 states reported 2-9 counts, and six states reported a single count. No counts were submitted from Delaware, the District of Columbia, or Hawaii.
The 27 Canadian counts in 2009 were held in 4 provinces. Ontario reported the highest number of counts (20). Mexico submitted 2 counts from 1 state.
NABA welcomed 13 new counts in 2009, all in the U.S.
